My experience in learning from thousands of grieving children is that remembering makes hoping possible. Grieving children’s futures become open to new experiences and relationships to the extent that past memories have been embraced.

Need 4. Develop a new self-identity based on a life without the person who died.

Among the most difficult changes the grieving child encounters are those that reflect his or her personal identity. Personal identity or self-perception comes from the ongoing process of establishing a sense of who one is. The death of someone loved can, and often does, permanently change the child’s self-perception.
